Yangon. Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is in jail, has been placed under house arrest from prison, a military official said Wednesday, as the junta government announced measures to protect prisoners from the Lu wave. 78-year-old Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is serving a 27-year prison sentence on multiple criminal charges, from corruption to violating Covid-19 regulations. After seizing power in a 2021 military coup and being detained by the military, Suu Kyi has been largely hidden from view and is said to be suffering from health problems.
A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Suu Kyi and former president Win Myint had been released from prison under house arrest. Junta spokesman Jaw Min Tun said the hot weather had prompted the authorities to take measures to protect vulnerable prisoners.
"Not only Dr Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Myint, but also some old prisoners were given necessary care due to the hot weather", he said. Temperatures in the capital Naypyidaw are expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and the weather is expected to get hotter in the coming weeks. In Nay Pyi Taw, Suu Kyi is believed to be detained in a specially constructed compound.
The junta announced on Wednesday that 3,300 prisoners will be released as part of the regular amnesty to celebrate the country's new year. Around 200 to 300 relatives and friends were waiting outside the Insen Prison in Yangon to receive the prisoners.
